History
Also known as the borough of Richmond, Staten Island offers surprises to those who take the time to get to know this little-known part of NYC.
The original residents were the Algonquin Indians of the Lenape culture. But when the Dutch came they named the island Staaten Eylandt after the Staten-Generaal, the Dutch parliament. When the British came, they naturally renamed the area, calling it the County of Richmond. Today, it's known by both names.
