According to www.LowerManhattan.info, the event happened on October 29, 1886 as a spontaneous celebration marking the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. New Yorkers gathered the leftover stock market ticker tape as confetti and a true New York City tradition was created. There have been a total of 176 Ticker Tape Parades along Broadway from Bowling Green to City Hall Park. If you look carefully at this Canyon of Heroes, you'll see granite and steel markers imbedded in the sidewalk.
