Submit Brook Bridge Art for the 125th anniversary
Attention all Art & History teachers and students, On May 24th of 1883, crowds of excited New Yorkers walked over the East River for the first time on the newly unveiled “New York and Brooklyn Bridge” (aka: “The Great East River Bridge.”) Since that time, this bridge has been the subject for millions of awe-inspired artists and historians. In preparation for the 125th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge, the City Reliquary Museum is announcing a Call for Student Art: Pre-Kindergarten through College. Student artists of all ages are encouraged to submit their DRAWINGS, PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, PHOTOGRAPHS, COLLAGES, and other miscellaneous CREATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS for display in the City Reliquary Museum exhibition during the month of May 2008.

The Brooklyn Bridge: 125 Years of Inspiration -- The exhibit will feature the artwork of Brooklyn-based students as inspired by the majestic towers of the Brooklyn Bridge and iconography that surrounds it. Teachers in public and private schools throughout Brooklyn are encouraged to assign an artistic project that encourages the students’ historic research and/or visual exploration of the bridge.

Collaborative projects and class assignments are welcome and encouraged. All artwork should show evidence of its inspiration in the Brooklyn Bridge and the vast history that surrounds it. There is no size restriction, but be advised that the exhibition hall measures apx. 12’x16’ with 10’ ceilings.

Submissions for the exhibition will be accepted through April 30th and on display to a wide public through the month of May. The exhibit, “The Brooklyn Bridge: 125 Years of Inspiration” will be part of the Borough’s many events surrounding this year’s big celebration and included in several public announcements.

View Downtown's Own Peregrine Falcons at 55 Water Street
55 Water Street is excited to announce the launch of the live Peregrine Falcon Bird Camera. Two Peregrine falcons currently reside on the 14th floor of 55 Water Street where they are nursing 4 eggs, the first of which arrived on St. Patrick's Day and the last of which arrived on Easter Sunday.

Peregrine falcons, nature's most remarkable flying hunter, are a recovered endangered species after being placed on the list in the 1970's as a result of organo-chlorine pesticides. In 2001, 15 territorial pairs enjoyed residence on various New York buildings and bridges, drawn in by the cliff-like topography of high-rise buildings and abundance of food such as pigeons, sparrows and starlings, among other birds. The Peregrine can dive through the air at speeds of 200 miles per hour, knocking out prey with its talons, then swoops down to catch the falling creature. The majestic falcons project a powerful image atop the cultivated skyline of New York City.

Visit www.Falcons.55water.com, where the activities of the falcons can be seen at any time right from your computer screen. You can also check Falcon News for updates including when to watch Christopher Nadareski, Wildlife Biologist, from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection tag the fledglings before they leave the nest.

April 2008 is Million Trees NYC Month
Join the Urban Park Rangers, MillionTreesNYC, and our community partners this April, MillionTreesNYC month, when we celebrate Arbor Day every day! This year, “think globally, plant locally” by joining in a volunteer tree planting, learning about tree care, and participating in MillionTreesNYC events across the city.

Here's some events to get you started:
April 6-April 12: Trees and New York City Take a walk in the woods. Van Cortlandt Park, the Staten Island Greenbelt, and Alley Pond are among the many New York City parks that provide spectacular forest experiences without leaving the five boroughs. And along the way, don’t forget to notice all of the trees along our City’s streets, in front yards, business districts and in our community gardens and playgrounds – they are also a part of New York City’s urban forest!
April 13-April 19: Trees and Our Neighborhoods Join a local organization, community garden group or block association and help care for newly planted trees and older trees alike. Having an active corps of tree stewards is critical to each tree’s survival.
April 20-May 3: Trees and Me Commit to planting a tree in your own backyard, request a tree for your street, or organize a tree planting or tree care outing in a schoolyard, playground or housing development. And remember to register your newly planted tree online!

Find events in your neck of the woods and dig-in! Check out the MillionTreesNYC community calendar at MillionTreesNYC.org

All performances take place at The Ink Well, located at 408 Rogers in Brooklyn, NY. $5 general admission.

PLG Arts promotes the arts, supports local artists, and builds community through celebrating the vibrant collective creativity of Prospect Lefferts Gardens and surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. Each evening we present a full-length feature film, preceded by a short film from an independent filmmaker.

City Reliquary announce the unveiling of two great new shows -- Over 200 Jumbo Souvenir Pencils, and 76 Kisses: Snapshots from the Collection of Lori Baker and David E. Brown
Over 200 Jumbo Souvenir Pencils, Collected by Stephanie Thompson from note-worthy places all across the world, featuring dozens of giant pencils from Australia, tons from the western coast of America, and several from right here at home in N.Y.C. Some are topped with creative heads, jumbo sharpeners, and another section includes Jumbo Pencils with Miniature Pencil mates. The collection is displayed using various unique hanging techniques including some hand-made wooden stands crafted by the collector's father in the great state of Minnesota.

The carefully selected vintage photographs comprise a catalog of the kiss. Each photo captures some essential quality of love and affection-the unguarded moment when two people, overcome with emotion, find their lips meeting another's. The photos span a full century, from a risqué and intimate smooch in a Victorian parlor to a 1990s Polaroid of a New York couple at a dance, with its super-saturated color and long embrace the very opposite of the 19th century image. The core of the collection are snapshots from the 1930s through the 1960s, widely considered the Golden Age of the American snapshot. 76 KISSES showcases the inventive, intuitive, and surprising explosion of creativity that small cameras and fast film brought.

The Art of Maternity, a mini art gallery within Destination Maternity® on Madison Avenue in New York City, presents Enceinte: A Belly Fortress as its current exhibition.
This unique exhibit features fine art photography by artist Denise Guerin. Guerin’s series of works portrays the pregnant belly as described by the word "enceinte," meaning an area protected by an encircling fortification. As a mother of two who is currently expecting a third child, Guerin is particularly interested in the exploration of the maternal body. As she photographs women on their journey through pregnancy, Guerin’s own belly grows along with them. In celebrating the miracle of life, Guerin’s striking photographs create a sense of intimacy, not only for the subject at hand, but also for the viewer. The audience is invited to participate in what feels like a private moment between the artist and mom-to-be. Each subject reminds us of how emotional and magical pregnancy can be.

A Carolina Silverbell was planted to mark the first of one million new trees that will grace the City by 2017. Million Trees NYC is part of PlaNYC, the most extensive plan to strengthen New York City’s urban environment ever undertaken by an American city. Unveiled by Mayor Bloomberg on Earth Day, the 127-point plan is designed to create the first environmentally sustainable 21st century city. By planting one million trees, the City’s urban forest —its most valuable environmental asset made up of street trees, trees in parks, and trees on public, private and commercial land—will increase by an astounding 20%. It will also usher in many quality-oflife improvements that come with planting trees. “Planting a million trees will make a noticeable difference around New York City,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Trees make neighborhoods more livable and increase property values, cool and clean the air, shelter and feed wildlife. The comforting shade of trees soothes the senses and returns us to nature, rounding out the rough edges of urban life.” For more information visit www.milliontreesnyc.org or call 311.
