New York Hostels: Budget Accommodation in the Big Apple

There’s nowhere in the world quite like New York. With its household name sights, its fantastic museums and galleries, its stellar shopping and a frankly dizzying array of dining and nightlife possibilities, the hard bit can be in knowing where to begin!

But with so much to see and do, it can be a little hard on the wallet. Which is where New York hostels come in! Regardless of whether you’re a backpacker or not, a night or two in a hostel is a great way of driving down the cost of a stay in the city.

Hostels in New York

New York hostels are scattered right across the Five Boroughs. Broadly speaking, though, the majority of places are clustered in two distinct blocks: out to the east of the city in Brooklyn and, especially, on the Upper West Side.

Sandwiched between Central Park and the Hudson River, the Upper West Side is one of the city’s more attractive, understatedly hip neighborhoods. As well as being a stone’s throw from the park, the area’s hostels are also within easy walking distance of the magnificent American Museum of Natural History and the rest of the ‘Museum Mile’.

Hostelling International has a huge garden to relax in and catch some rays in summer; Continental Lounge offers a great lounge which acts as something of a magnet to other backpackers in the city, and Jazz on the City offers some of the most attractive prices for a bed in New York.

A little to the north in Harlem, a couple of other Jazz Hostels – Jazz on Lennox and Jazz on the Villa – sit almost side by side, while 5th Avenue Spot has its own bar to hang out in, shoot some pool and meet a few other travelers.

Beds in Brooklyn

Layfayette International Over in Brooklyn, meanwhile, Lafayette International Hostel has light, airy rooms and access to a well-stocked communal kitchen, while Crowne Brownstone has a flash gaming room complete with flat-screen TV to brag about!

Brooklyn is also home to (arguably) the best hostel in New York: Loftstel Greene Avenue. Here all the usual hostel facilities are available (free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, security lockers etc.) but there’s a reassuringly personal feel and a lively vibe, too.

Other Budget Accommodation in the City

As well as New York hostels, there are plenty of cheap hotels in the city to help save a few precious bucks on accommodation. Many of the cheap hotels in New York are spread out across the south of the city in Chelsea and down into the East Village.

Gershwin Hotel Of these, the Chelsea Star Hotel is a particularly attractive option, offering as it does, both private and shared accommodation, and still coming in at around the cost of a hostel. A couple of blocks to the east in the Flatiron District, meanwhile, the Gershwin Hotel’s chic, boutique hotel vibe doesn’t come at the expense of attractive rates.
